“Two Journeys” is a project by The Golden Pixel Cooperative, initiated by Viktoria Schmid and Lisa Truttmann in collaboration with Los Angeles-based filmmakers Rebecca Baron and Nora Sweeney. It was presented on October 17, 2019, at Medienwerkstatt and on October 18, 2019, at Blickle Kino at Belvedere 21 in Vienna, before traveling on to Los Angeles, where presentations took place in November 2019.

Through this collective exchange, two short film programs were compiled, consisting of films that relate broadly to the two places of their creation, Vienna and Los Angeles. Austria and the United States are just starting points – we travel to a library in Buenos Aires, a ranch in rural Mexico, the sky in Switzerland, a pool in Tehran and through intangible spaces and surfaces. The films, including documentary, experimental, and narrative work, range in form, and some defy categories. The works of pioneers such as Chick Strand, Charles Burnett and Friedl vom Gröller are in dialogue with those of filmmakers from the next generation. Taking the title from “Vienna to Los Angeles: Two Journeys,” Esther McCoy’s collection of letters between architects residing in Los Angeles and Vienna, the “Two Journeys” project aims to create a cross cultural conversation through cinema.

Biographies

Rebecca Baron lebt als Filmemacherin, Kuratorin und Künstlerin in Los Angeles und leitet derzeit das Film und Video-Department am California Institute of the Arts. In ihren Essayfilmen beschäftigte sie sich mit der Konstruktion von Geschichte und der Verbindung von Fotografie und Bewegtbild. Derzeit erforscht sie die Einflüsse von Künstlicher Intelligenz, Machine Learning und dem Design von Datenbanken auf filmische Ausdrucksformen. Ihre Arbeiten wurden im Rahmen zahlreicher internationaler Biennalen, Festivals und Institutionen gezeigt: Documenta 12, New York Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Festival, British Film Institute, Centre Pompidou, Toronto Film Festival, London Film Festival, Viennale sowie im Whitney Museum of American Art. Sie erhielt Auszeichnungen wie das Guggenheim Fellowship (2002) und das Fellowship des Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study (2007). Nora Sweeney, geboren 1985 in Cincinnati, Ohio, lebt als Filmemacherin und Fotografin in Los Angeles. In ihren Arbeiten beschäftigt sie sich mit kulturellen Traditionen, dem Thema Arbeit und migrantischen Communities in den USA. Sie studierte am Oberlin College (BA) und am California Institute of the Arts (M.F.A in Film/Video). Ihre Filme wurden im Kontext folgender Festivals und Institutionen präsentiert: Redcat, Antimatter International Film and Media Arts Festival, Chicago Underground Film Festival, Milwaukee Underground Film Festival und dem Athens International Film + Video Festival. Beim Black Maria Film and Video Festival gewann sie mit ihrem Film Something Like Whales den Jury-Preis.
