The event addresses structural exclusion within the Viennese art scene and critiques the dominance of Euro-American perspectives.

In Vienna, Euro-American perspectives dominate the contemporary art scene. Artists of colour and Black artists are largely excluded from these spaces. On rare occasions, they are invited to exhibit their work within a specific framework designed to cater to white desires for ‘exotic’ art.

WE DEY X SPACE has set itself the goal of transforming these unequal power structures within Vienna’s art scene by creating a self-organised art space. In this space, Black artists and artists of colour have the opportunity to have their voices heard and to showcase their work from a self-determined perspective.

Jaqueline Ejiji is historian and founding member of WE DEY. Currently she concentrates on social, political and economic conditions in the field of art and cultural production.

Sunanda Mesquita is a visual artist, curator and co-founder of WE DEY. In her artistic work she focuses on concepts of home, (be)longing and community.
