As part of the Golden Pixel Cooperative’s event series "Collective Infrastructures", KINE founding member Constantinos Hadzinikolaou gives for the first time an insight into the multi-faceted activities of the group by reviving selected film rarities and classics in the course of a mixed-media performative lecture: an Austrian premiere!

KINE (est. 2001) was an Athens-based collective of film-makers and -aficionados who meticulously arranged experimental film screenings in various spaces throughout the city—on roof tops, in bars, artist studios, galleries, cinemas, festivals and public space.

Adopting its name from Werner Nekes’ concept of the two-frame unit as the fundamental element of film, KINE was active for over a decade, introducing the work of established filmmakers such as Jonas Mekas and Stan Brackage, as well as films by its members and emerging artists, to a local audience—pre-youtube and accompanied by specially produced program texts and materials.

Constantinos Hadzinikolaou (b. 1974) is an artist, filmmaker, and writer based in Athens. His core filmography consists of silent Super 8 films, each lasting no more than three minutes. Moreover, he has written two poetry chapbooks and a novel. In 2017, he participated in documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel with two works combining film and literature, inhabiting both spaces simultaneously, with equal intensity and a need to escape the bounds of both: „Hadzinikolaou’s approach is poetic—or antipoetic, as he prefers to believe. It is also political, or political by chance, because in his view, the more poetic a text is (the more precise, that is), the more violent and political it becomes.” (Katerina Tselou) Hadzinikolaou is currently preparing a documentary about the history of a Greek rock ’n’ roll band and working on his next novel.
