As a brief preview of her new essay film “Tarpaulins”, Lisa Truttmann discusses her approach and shares some initial photographic impressions from her cinematic journey through Los Angeles. There, she set out in search of colourfully clad buildings, the termites feasting within them, their adversaries, and many detours along the way.

Silkworms growing up within a Kurdish family. A Persian-speaking parrot. An empty penguin pool, the waterways of the Amazon, a television in a suburban house. In between, a disoriented nurse who sets up her practice in abandoned places.

Drawing on the Notgalerie’s location between neat suburban estates and wild meadows, the films in this programme explore the fragile relationship between humans, animals and the environment. In a quiet and poetic manner, these four female filmmakers develop highly individual perspectives that challenge familiar frameworks and patterns.
