The event “bildersprechen” explores the complex relationship between direction and cinematography in documentary filmmaking. Through personal insights and film examples, it examines the creative exchange between those involved and demonstrates how decisions, intuition and collaboration shape the creation of images.

“Working with a cinematographer is like a friendship. Sometimes the timing is right, the chemistry is there, the non-verbal communication flows, and you understand each other. And even under difficult conditions and in confined spaces, it works. And sometimes it just doesn’t work out. That’s perfectly normal,” says Valerie Blankenbyl over the phone as we prepare for the event. Alongside many other fascinating considerations, Klemens Hufnagel lists “tableaux vs. resolved scenes”, “static vs. moving camera”, “the sound engineer as a key partner in spontaneous work”, “filming with amateur actors” as possible topics relating to the decisions that must be made individually between the director and the cinematographer during filming.

The two guests, Valerie Blankenbyl (documentary filmmaker) and Klemens Hufnagl (cinematographer), will present their personal approaches to the ‘collaborative’ creation of images in documentary filmmaking – specifically the communication between director and cinematographer – through workshop discussions and film clips.
